Located on the Quinebaug Valley Community College campus in Danielson, QMC is a public, magnet high school open to all Connecticut residents in grades 9-12. Students attend QMC at no cost to them; funding is provided by the sending district. The overarching theme of QMC is that of the middle college experience. Research indicates that students who are developmentally ready to be more directly involved and responsible for the design, development and management of their own learning, and who benefit from the integration of relevant academic and real-world learning experiences, will thrive in a college environment where they have greater autonomy. QMC students have access to laboratory, career and vocational resources that may otherwise be unavailable to them in the region’s public high schools. QMC's official partners are Plainfield, Woodstock, Brooklyn, Windham, Thompson, Killingly, Pomfret, Voluntown and Franklin. These districts have agreed to reserve a limited number of seats for students in their town to attend QMC. However, students also attend from many other Connecticut towns.
Benefits: QMC offers students of northeastern Connecticut the opportunity to participate in a high school/community college program that provides the level of instruction and support necessary to ensure that learners who are ready to accept greater responsibility and involvement in the management of their own learning are able to succeed. QMC's approach fosters the habits of mind and the discipline necessary to achieve rigorous academic, career and civic goals. Students of all grades have access to a challenging Humanities and STEM curriculum and in-the-field science experiments utilizing EASTCONN's state-of-the-art Mobile STEM Lab.
