Dear EASTCONN Community,
I felt compelled to write to you during what can only be described as a series of disturbing events in our nation’s history. Not only are we managing the stunning reality of an unforeseen pandemic, but we are also now confronting, once again, an instance of indefensible violence against one of our minority citizens.
As the nation confronts the senseless murder of an unarmed African American man in Minnesota last week, and the acts of violence that continue against black Americans nationwide, I want to assure the EASTCONN family that we, as an agency and citizens of the world, stand against all such acts of violence, discrimination, oppression and inhumanity. Acts of racism and bias, like those that resulted in the death of George Floyd, cause us all to feel a sense of outrage.
I want to assure you that EASTCONN supports social justice and equity, and condemns all acts of racism, hatred and violence that target any minority. EASTCONN as an agency promotes equity, inclusion and fairness in all of its programs and schools, and among its staff, students and communities.
In the days ahead, our responsibility is to listen, learn, and advance our knowledge of implicit bias and racism within ourselves and others, in order to effect change. I would urge you to engage in these conversations within your families, within your community and among your EASTCONN colleagues.
Thank you for your continued efforts to support our EASTCONN community during this challenging time.
Gary S. Mala
EASTCONN Executive Director
