Keynote:The keynote address will focus on the the experience of trauma in the lives of young children, its effects on the developing brain and the impact of early relationships on long term behavioral patterns. Participants will learn about:

  1. The incidence of significant trauma and the long term effects of that on health and development.

  2. The physiologic effects of trauma and the impact of brain related changes on development.

  3. The ways in which early relationship patterns are carried forward to new relationships.

Keynote and morning presenter: Marianne Barton, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist whose interests focus on infant and early childhood mental health. She is the Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychological Sciences at UConn and Director of the Psychological Services Clinic. She consults regularly to early childhood programs including Birth to Three and Child FIRST and is member of the Board of Directors for the CT Association for Infant Mental Health and Child FIRST.

Morning Session: Addressing the Effects of Trauma in the Context of Early Relationships. This session will focus on strategies for working with parents and children to support resilience. Participants will learn about:

  1. Strategies for recognizing and addressing difficult relationship patterns.

  2. Strategies for engaging parents in reflection on child behavior.

  3. Strategies for developing reflective practice and self care in working with families with high levels of trauma and need.

Afternoon sessions:
The ABC’s of the CKC will focus on using a self-assessment tool for all, will be presented by Deb Adams, Education from CT OEC and Diane Gozemba

Learn about the shared core knowledge and competencies across multiple early childhood roles supports:

  • Common language across disciplines and roles;

  • A common thread of professional development expectations for competency

  • A broader base of knowledge and understanding to better serve children and

Creating a Calm Environment for Infants and Toddlers with a Trauma Informed Lens will be presented by Emily Werner, play therapist and Sheila Skahan, faculty at Three Rivers Community College and content expert on environments.
