High school students from participating districts develop increased diversity awareness through activities focused on the history of immigration and the many ways in which immigration affects our society. Participants take part in reading and writing workshops, and attend a conference during which they hear from speakers who have immigrated to the United States. Students explore their own families’ immigration history, and become involved in a variety of other activities that include EASTCONN Adventure team-building exercises in this Interdistrict Grant program.

Benefits: Students develop relationships with peers from other school districts, while working closely with local writers and historians, as they explore the lives and experiences of Connecticut's immigrants. Students learn to use literature and original source documents to explore local history. By writing poems and researching their own family history and ethnicity, students improve academic skills and increase their appreciation of diversity.
