Created in 2004, and located in the Capitol Theater in busy downtown Willimantic, ACT (Arts at the Capitol Theater) is a full-day, comprehensive, arts magnet high school, serving grades 9-12. ACT's official partners are Eastford, Killingly, Norwich, Plainfield, Putnam, Stafford, Windham and Woodstock; however, students also attend from additional Connecticut towns. ACT utilizes an integrated approach to instruction, using the arts as motivation for students as they study standards-based core academic subjects. Differentiated instruction in the classroom addresses individual student learning needs. Students study with certified academic teachers and professional artists in this small, arts-focused learning community. Each grade is limited to approximately 35 students, making this an intimate, focused, artistic learning environment. Students attend classes from 8:45 a.m. to 4:25 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with classes ending at 1:07 p.m. on Friday. The Capitol Theater, which houses ACT, boasts three theaters, a set design and construction shop, audio/video editing suites, classrooms, dance studios, a costume shop, and a creative writing computer lab. Interested applicants should contact ACT Principal Sarah Mallory to schedule a Shadow Day.
Benefits: Small classes and differentiated instruction result in a personalized education experience for every student. Students have access to a wide range of arts offerings, not only in the classroom, but also onstage and/or behind the scenes in technical theater. Students develop friendships with peers from across the region who have similar interests. Students who reside in the partner towns of Eastford, Killingly, Norwich, Plainfield, Putnam, Stafford, Windham and Woodstock have the benefit of a secured amount of ACT seats.
