Mosaic Service Projects
Students planned
their school and community projects based on a need. The projects
included:
- Manchester High School students were "Big Brothers" or "Big
Sisters" to elementary school students who were learning English.
First the high school students were pen pals with the elementary
school students. Students from the high school traveled to the
elementary school to work with the students.
- Parish Hill High School presented a “Diversity Day” for the
seventh grade in May. Students began the day with ice breakers and
food from a variety of nations. Students participated in
multi-cultural hands-on activities. The Diversity Club sponsored an
assembly with Gabriel Deng who is one of the lost boys of Sudan.
Students are raising money for a school that Deng is building in his
village
- Students at Ellis Tech were paired with a seventh grade from the
local intermediate school. They met once a month and were involved
in team building activities as well as discussing issues effecting
students today (ex: bullying, harassment, home issues, etc.)
- Students from Windham Technical High School continued the
service learning project Lemons and Limes. They presented the
activity to students at Windham Middle School and Maple Street
School and Center Road School in Vernon. In addition, students
facilitated training for their peers from Ellis Tech, Windham High
School and Parish Hill High School at a Mosaic field experience. In
addition, Mosaic students from Windham Tech collaborated with the
GSA to plan and organize the
events for the National Day of Silence on April 25th. Over 117
students registered to remain silent through out the school day as a
means of protesting the silence faced by targets of sexual, racial,
religious or ethnic discrimination.
- Students at Windham High School focused on the issue of literacy
in Windham/Willimantic, with one group focusing on childhood
literacy and one focusing on adolescent literacy.
