Waves of History
Conference ~ April 25, 2008
Students from the four participating schools –
Bloomfield High School, Plainfield High School, Windham High School and
Windham Technical High School, gathered at the Bishop Center on the
University of Connecticut campus.

The
morning sessions included performances by
Dr. Philip Lazowski, Holocaust survivor,
and
Raouf Mama, internationally known
multilingual storyteller who performed indigenous tales from his native
Benin.
The afternoon sessions offered a variety
of opportunities. Workshops included: history detective, discovering
your heritage, the art of Chinese combat, paper quilts, puppetry, EASTCONN Adventure,
scenes the sizzle, Every
Picture Tells a Story: examining visual art and real life pictures
to determine the messages and a student panel who discussed their
experiences coming to America.


Paper
quilts workshop offered a brief overview of quilting in America through
the ages with a special focus on the role of Freedom Quilts and
participants created a mini paper quilt. Sarah Beth Parks from the UCONN Puppetry Dept, demonstrated the
concept of shadow puppets and students created their own puppets.
History Detective focused on examining family artifacts and
Discovering your Ancestry
allowed students to use the Internet to learn about family history.
In the Every Picture Tells a Storyworkshop
students examined visual art and real life pictures to determine the
messages that are received by the media in our culture. Students used
"character cards" to write scenes that sizzle and learned about
the art of Chinese combat.

EASTCONN Adventure
which focused on problem solving
and team building skills.
