On Your Future

More than one-third of Americans have earned a post-secondary degree1, but few obtained one while still in their teenage years. QMC gives students the opportunity to receive an associate’s degree before high school ends, earning them up to 60 college credits at no cost; a savings of approximately $40,000 and a potential of 2 years completed towards a 4-year degree.

Once a QMC student has taken and passed the Basic Skills Assessment (BSA), they are able to take classes at Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC) for credit towards both their high school diploma and an associate’s degree. Classes are taken on the QVCC campus, alongside college students and according to the college schedule. Courses are graded and taught by QVCC faculty. Students are able to take any class for which they qualify and can fit into their schedule. Evening classes are offered, however, transportation to these classes are the responsibility of the student. The cost for books, tuition and supplies are covered for all QMC students.

Class of 2018
At Quinebaug Middle College, there are numerous ways to accumulate college credits…This is extremely convenient since the high school is actually built onto and attached to [Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC)]. This setup has allowed me to take as many college classes as a full-time QVCC student. I now have over 30 college credits and will be able to graduate with an associate's degree by the time I am a senior. Although classes are a great opportunity and learning experience, they do require a lot of responsibility and time management. This helps students who are enrolled in these courses greatly strengthen essential life skills such as organization, independence, and the ability to be an engaged and self-directed learner. Hazel has 31 credits as a junior and has applied for the “Jump Start” program at the college and conceivably earn her associates as she graduates.
Class of 2017
Attending Quinebaug Middle College has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. From my very first semester, I was able to begin my college experience and start earning credits through dual enrolled courses, UCONN early college experience and direct enrolled classes. In two years, I was able to earn 51 credits towards an associate’s degree and explore different subjects such as economics, chemistry and graphic design while gaining actual [college] classroom experience. Thanks to QMC, I have developed my academic abilities, and I am ready to succeed at a four-year university. The benefits of my QMC experience go beyond academics. It has been a well-rounded and unique experience, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
