Instructor-Facilitated Online Classes

Because we know your time is precious … EASTCONN Community Education is proud to offer instructor-facilitated online courses that are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive. Our instructors are famous for their ability to create warm and supportive communities of learners. It's no wonder that many long-lasting friendships have formed in our lively and intelligent discussion areas. All courses run for six weeks (with a two-week grace period at the end). Courses are project-oriented and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, supplementary links, and more. You can complete any of these courses entirely from your home or office and at any time of the day or night.

How to get started:

1. Just click on the Ed2Go logo below to view our complete list of instructor-facilitated online classes.

2. Click the Courses link, once you choose the department and course title you are interested in, select the Enroll Now button. Follow the instructions to enroll and pay for your course. Here you will choose a username and password that will grant you access to the Classroom.

3. When your course starts, return to our Online Instruction Center and click the Classroom link. To begin your studies, simply log in with the username and password you selected during enrollment.

ARTS & CRAFTS

INTRODUCTION TO WIRE JEWELRY
This workshop will provide you with a solid foundation for making your own one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry as you learn solderless chain-making and how to create a variety of wire art bead wraps. Incorporate these techniques into your own beadwork or use them to embellish your own works of art! Forging and oxidizing will also be discussed. INTRODUCTION TO PRECIOUS METAL CLAY
Precious Metal Clay is a unique material that consists of ultra-fine particles of fine silver suspended in an organic binder to form a clay. Once the clay is molded, textured and fired, the silver particles fuse together to form a solid piece. STAINED GLASS
Learn the basics of scoring and cutting glass using lead came and copper foil methods for creating beautiful sun-catchers, mirrors, jewelry trays, windows, kaleidoscopes, lamps and much more. Bring $80 to the first class for a materials kit, which includes a 100-Watt soldering iron, 60/40 solder, copper foil, flux and brush, breaking pliers, marking pen, glass cutter, and glass.

HANDBUILT POTTERY FOR BEGINNERS
Discover the art of handbuilt pottery in this hands-on workshop taught by a seasoned instructor with more than 30 years of experience in the field. Make and glaze several clay items of your own design using basic potting techniques, including slab- and tile-making, coil, pinch pot, and basic carving. Learn also about firing and glaze calculation. No experience is necessary, but potters of all skill levels are welcome. Bring $35 for materials, which include clay, glaze, and firing. All other supplies, including tools and aprons, will be provided by the instructor.

Want to know the basics? Receive extensive hands-on instruction using IBM-compatible computers. Learn how to interpret computer advertisements in order to choose the best computer system for your home or business. If you are using a manual computing system for your existing business or starting a new business, this class is for you! We will focus on all aspects of QuickBooks Pro. You are welcome to bring your own data, which can be temporarily installed into our computer. We will introduce you to basic accounting principals, so you will know whether or not your reports make sense. In class, you will be able to customize information you have learned and apply it to your company’s needs.

Microsoft Excel for Windows is a powerful, user-friendly spreadsheet program for home and business applications. The objective of this class is to learn the basic fundamentals of a worksheet through a hands-on approach. You will also learn program and toolbar configuration, how to format and create professional-looking tables, and how to use formulas and functions through practice on real-world examples. Improve your flexibility, strengthen your nervous system, increase your self-awareness, and relieve your tensions through yoga. DON’T BE A VICTIM: SELF-DEFENSE FOR WOMEN
Learn how awareness and preparedness skills can minimize your risk of falling victim to assault or rape, as well as how to subdue an attacker if necessary. Learn basic grappling moves from the Chinese art of Chi Na that will enable you to escape from or defend against any situation in which you are grabbed, held or otherwise restrained. The class will consist of lecture and physical training. Students will practice moves on each other in pairs. Wear comfortable clothes. No shoes are allowed in the practice room.

COUPLES MASSAGE
Over the course of three weeks, couples will learn a basic Swedish massage. The last two weeks, each will receive a full-hour massage by their partner. Couples will need to bring a sleeping bag or mat to share, plus two sheets or large towels for draping.

DREAM WORKSHOP
In a workshop setting, learn about and discuss the science of sleep. Learn the meanings of dream symbols; access your dream recall; explore lucid dreaming; use dreams for problem-solving and growth; find context in content; and explore precognition. Course materials include a dream journal and a willingness to share dream content. Students must be 18 years or older.

GARDENING

GARDEN TOUR & LECTURE
Gardening fans, this one is for you! This special class for plant-lovers offers a garden tour and lecture at Gazebo Gardens. And while there is no such thing as a “maintenance-free” garden, this certified master gardener will share her own insights and gardening secrets, gleaned over 35 years of successful gardening. She is an advocate of “low-maintenance gardening.” She will also discuss each of her many unusual plants.

PLANT PROPAGATION
In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to divide various plant materials. With more than 30 gardens and 1,000 different perennials to choose from, you will bring home a division of many different types of plants. Your master gardener/instructor will provide the necessary tools. You’ll take home 10 to 15 plants to cultivate in your own yard at the end of class. A $30 materials fee will be collected at the start of class.

High school students! This course will prepare you for the College Board SAT I Mathematics Exam. Students are encouraged to purchase The Official SAT Study Guide. It is available at major bookstores (or their Web sites), or from the College Board’s Web site at:

WRITING A SHORT PERSONAL ESSAY
In this hands-on course, author and stonemason Jim Wesolowski teaches you how to put your thoughts on paper just for the fun of it. Results may vary, but anyone with the skill to write a grocery list can get a good laugh or maybe a touch of insight by doing a bit of short essay-writing. Essays are about communicating with ourselves and the learning and catharsis that they can bring; but they are also about communicating with the wider world around us (family,
friends, strangers) and the satisfaction of knowing we are understood. The only materials required are pencil and paper, and the purchase or possession of an E. B. White book
of essays (and that is optional). Jim is the author of Sighting By Eye, Selected Essays of a Ruminative Stonemason.

This can-do course provides you with everything you need to go from the classroom to the workplace, including over 100 drink recipes, opening and closing duties, product
knowledge and more. Servers and Managers Alcohol Responsibility Training (S.M.A.R.T.) certification teaches responsible service of alcohol with extra emphasis on checking IDs and underage drinking problems. Participants must be 18 or older. The cost of materials is included in the registration fee. No real alcohol is used. Recertification is now available!

Can’t get to a S.M.A.R.T. bartending class? No worries. S.M.A.R.T. certification online is at your service. Do you work in a restaurant? A bar? A Club? A hotel? A package store? Would you like to? Then get an edge with S.M.A.R.T. certification.

Servers & Managers Alcohol Responsibility Training (S.M.A.R.T.) is a national certification program for anyone involved in the sale and/or service of alcohol.

Online, you will learn: what alcohol is and its effects on your patrons; B.A.C./Absorption rate factors; behavioral changes; proper techniques for checking IDs to purchase alcohol; Connecticut State liquor regulations; intervention techniques using the traffic light system; and much, much more. There is a 30-question, multiple-choice test at the end of the course and a score of 75% or better is required to obtain S.M.A.R.T. certification. Once you have successfully completed the online certification, you may download the temporary S.M.A.R.T. permit from your own computer printer. The permanent permit will be sent to you within

INTRODUCTION TO THE FIDDLE
Playing the fiddle is becoming an increasingly popular recreational activity, as witnessed by the growth of fiddle clubs, magazines, and summer camps. In our area, the Quiet Corner Fiddlers, the Old Fiddlers Club of Rhode Island, and the Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddlers present opportunities for amateur fiddlers to develop skills and perform in public. In this delightful class, an experienced fiddler will teach you how to hold and play the fiddle, use a variety of playing techniques, and read music. The instructor will also lead the class in learning several tunes. Please bring a playable violin and bow and $20 for a book/CD package to the first class. DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINING
Does your dog need a tune-up? This class is for you ! Learn basic dog obedience techniques in a relaxed, fun, productive atmosphere. Dogs must be at least five months old and be up-to-date on vaccinations. Please bring a choke-chain (be sure to have correct size for your dog) and a five-foot or longer cotton lead to first class. Registration

Early Bird Discount Discount: Register on or before Friday, March 9, 2007, and receive a 10% discount off a registration of $50 or more! Some restrictions apply; please see course descriptions for exceptions. Cannot be combined with any other discount.

Senior Discount: Senior citizens may take a 10% discount off a registration of $50 or more! Some restrictions apply; please see course descriptions for exceptions. Cannot be combined with any other discount.

Payment: Please make checks payable to EASTCONN Community Education. Phone and fax registrations accepted with VISA and MasterCard only.

Registration: Paid pre-registration is required! Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served, PAID basis. Classes run contingent on PAID enrollment and may be cancelled or postponed due to insufficient registrations. If class is canceled or postponed, you will be notified using the contact information you provide with your registration.

Confirmation/Receipts: Confirmations of registration in a class, written or verbal, are not provided unless requested. Please provide a self-addressed, paid envelope should you need a written confirmation or receipt. Unless you are otherwise notified, classes will run as scheduled.

Refund Policy: A full refund will be issued ONLY when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If you decide not to take a class, a 90% refund will be issued if we are notified 10 days prior to the first class. A 50% refund will be issued if we are notified before the second class meeting. No refunds apply to one-day classes or bus trips unless EASTCONN cancels the course. Please allow one month for processing.

Inclement Weather: If EASTCONN and/or the school at which your class takes place is closed due to inclement weather, your class will not meet. Should inclement weather develop during the day, class cancellations will be announced by late afternoon. In case of inclement weather, please watch WVIT Channel 30 News or listen to 98.3 FM, 97.5 FM, WINY 1350 AM, or WILI 1400 AM.

EASTCONN Adult Education offers several options for completing your high school education. Our programs help you earn your diploma through a variety of methods that build on the skills and experience you already have. And all of our programs are convenient and offered free of charge. 3 Diploma Options: One is right for you!

The Connecticut State Diploma - General Education Development (GED):
EASTCONN offers preparation for the GED exam that covers subject matter common to high school curricula across the country. Adults who pass the exam are issued a Connecticut High School Diploma from the State Department of Education. Accommodations for the GED test are available for qualified individuals with a disability.

Adult High School Credit Diploma (AHSCDP):
An EASTCONN high school diploma may be earned by adults who fulfill state requirements through a combination of past high school credits, independent study, online courses, evening classes, documented work experience, and community service.

Get with the BEAT (Out-of-School Youth):
This high school completion/employment program for eligible out of school youth between the ages of 16 and 21, is funded by the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board. It is designed to assist eligible out-of-school youth who want to move from high school drop-out to high school graduate, to advance from unemployed to gainfully employed, and to enter postsecondary programs. This program includes a case manager who works with participants to overcome barriers that prevent them from being successful in school and the workplace.


Other Adult Education Programs:

  • EASTCONN's Roads to Success: This intensive program combines basic skills and high school completion with development of employability and work readiness skills, including basic computer skills. Participants also develop resumes, cover letters, job search skills, and a career plan. For more information, contact Suzanne Cimochowski in Danielson at (860) 779-3770.
  • EASTCONN, ETC. (Employment, Training, College): This program transitions students who have successfully completed EASTCONN’s GED or AHSCDP programs to postsecondary education and training programs. With the assistance of a Transitions Coach, students learn about postsecondary options and develop a transition plan which can include visiting programs and completing applications and financial aid forms to reach their postsecondary goals.
  • English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL): Beginning and intermediate level ESL classes are available for individuals of limited English proficiency seeking to improve their speaking and listening skills.
  • Citizenship Classes: EASTCONN citizenship classes help individuals prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.
  • Basic Skills Instruction: Instruction in reading, writing and/or math skills is offered days and evenings.

EASTCONN's Workplace Literacy programs are a cost-effective way to upgrade employee skill levels. We bring solutions to your employee training needs, including computer instruction, basic education, high school completion, and English-as-a-Second Language. Adult Education Instructors:
Qualified, certified instructors interested in teaching classes to help adult learners attain their high school equivalency, learn English as a second language, or obtain their U.S. citizenship are welcome to inquire about possible open positions with EASTCONN Adult Education. Community Education Instructors: Teach a credit-free, recreational evening course for adults next fall through EASTCONN Community Education. Share your expertise, skills, and passion in the areas of arts and crafts, fitness, dance, personal growth, recreation, or technology with others. Certification is not required. Please note: While all course ideas are very welcome, we are especially looking for instructors in the following areas: Microsoft Office Suite, car repair and maintenance, household repair and maintenance, math and verbal SAT preparation, digital photography, and cake decorating. Earn some extra spending money, enhance your resume, and meet fun people!
