Instructor-Facilitated Online Classes

Because we know your time is precious … EASTCONN Community Education is proud
to offer instructor-facilitated online courses
that are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive. Our instructors
are famous for their ability to create warm and supportive communities of
learners. It's no wonder that many long-lasting friendships have formed in our
lively and intelligent discussion areas. All courses run for six weeks (with a
two-week grace period at the end). Courses are project-oriented and include
lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, supplementary links,
and more. You can complete any of these courses entirely from your home or
office and at any time of the day or night.
How to get started:
1. Just click on the Ed2Go logo below to view our complete list of
instructor-facilitated online classes.
2. Click the Courses link, once you choose the department and course title
you are interested in, select the Enroll Now button. Follow the instructions to
enroll and pay for your course. Here you will choose a username and password
that will grant you access to the Classroom.
3. When your course starts, return to our Online Instruction Center and click
the Classroom link. To begin your studies, simply log in with the username and
password you selected during enrollment.
Please note!! Online classes require you to register securely online using a
MasterCard, VISA., or American Express. Do not use the printable Community
Education registration for to register for any online classes.
Start Dates: A new section of every course in this catalog will begin on
September 20, 2006; October 18, 2006; November 8, 2006; and December 13, 2006.
Requirements: All courses require Internet access, e-mail, the Netscape
Navigator, or the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Some courses may have additional

ARTS & CRAFTS
Stained Glass
Learn the basics of scoring and cutting glass using lead came and copper foil
methods for creating beautiful sun catchers, mirrors, jewelry trays, windows,
kaleidoscopes, lamps and much more. Bring $75 to the first class for a materials
kit, which includes a 100-Watt soldering iron, 60/40 solder, copper foil, flux
and brush, breaking pliers, marking pen, glass cutter, and glass.

Watercolor
for Beginners
For the beginner or experienced painter, this class will cover basic watercolor
techniques as well as wax resist processes, pen and ink wash, and collage. A
list of necessary supplies costing approximately $15 will be provided and
reviewed on the first night of class.

Knitting for
Beginners
Knitting is the hottest "new" hobby these days. Everyone is doing it, from
celebrities to kids in classrooms. Join their ranks in this class, where you
will learn the basic cast on and bind off method as well as the two main
stitches in knitting: knit and purl. You will also learn how to follow a simple
pattern and how to choose yarn and needles appropriate for your projects. You
will complete a project during class and can choose from the following:
slippers, a scarf, or a hat. Depending on your pace, you may even complete all
three! Students may bring their own yarn and needles or may purchase yard and
needles from the instructor. The average cost is $8-$14 for both items.

Knitting Custom-Sized
Socks
Discover a no-fail method to knit from any type of yarn a pair of socks that
will fit your feet correctly and with comfort every time. You’ll never need a
store-bought sock pattern again! Multiple types of heels and toes will be
covered. Students should have a minimum of basic knitting skills (equivalent to
having completed Knitting for Beginners); intermediate and advanced
knitters are welcome. Bring a set of either four or five double-pointed needles
or two circular needles in sizes 2, 3, or 4. Instructor will supply a variety of
hand-dyed, local yarn in fingering, sport, or worsted weights for students to
purchase (costing approximately $15-$20). Students are welcome to bring their
own yarn.

An Accordion Album

how to fold acid- and lignin-free archival materials into a clever album in

Handbuilt Pottery
for Beginners
Discover the art of handbuilt pottery in this hands-on workshop taught by a
seasoned instructor with over 30 years experience in the field. Make and glaze
several clay items of your own design using basic potting techniques, including
slab- and tile-making, coil, pinch pot, and basic carving. Learn also about
firing and glaze calculation. No experience is necessary, but potters of all
skill levels are welcome. Bring $35 for materials, which include clay, glaze,

Make Your Own Halloween
Luminary
Design and create your own attractive luminary just in time for inclusion in
your Halloween festivities! From a pumpkin to a paper bag to a ghost, the form
your luminary takes is limited only by your imagination. No experience is
necessary, but potters of all skill levels are welcome. Bring $10 for materials,

Halloween Totem
Mask-Making Event
Looking for a fun way to welcome Halloween? Join Studio #5 for this unique
pottery event celebrating its fourth year. Ring in this year’s holiday by
creating a colorful clay Halloween mask which will be displayed on a totem pole
during Main Street, Willimantic’s Halloween on Main Street Festival next year.
Ages 14 and up are welcome. A $5 donation toward materials is not required, but

Shintaido
Shintaido, Japanese for "new body way," is rooted in traditional martial arts,
such as Karate and Kendo (sword fighting). However, while most traditional
practices emphasize fighting and self-defense, Shintaido, described as
"meditation in motion," uses these same techniques to foster self-discipline and
cooperation with others. As such, it is an exercise of the body and

Don’t Be a Victim:
Self-Defense for Women
Learn how awareness and preparedness skills can minimize your risk of falling
victim to assault or rape, as well as how to subdue an attacker if necessary.
Learn basic grappling moves from the Chinese art of Chi Na that will enable you
to escape from or defend against any situation in which you are grabbed, held or
otherwise restrained. The class will consist of lecture and physical training.

Money and Kids Raising
Financially Responsible Children: A Workshop for Parents and Children
Do your children have a bad case of the “gimmees?” Do you find yourself
wondering how to teach them the value of a dollar? Would you like to decrease
toy store tantrums or other conflicts with your children about money? This
seminar will help parents consider the following: Should you give your child an
allowance and, if so, how should that be handled? What helps children learn how
to spend wisely and the value of saving? Can I help my children learn about this
even if I am not so great at it myself? Children 10 and older are welcomed to
attend, and will learn about allowance, budgets, spending, and compound interest
in terms of both saving and using credit cards. Course developer Ruth Ettenberg

SMART (Server & Manager Alcohol Responsibility Training) Certification teaches

drinking problems. Participants must be 18 or older. The cost of materials is

Become a Nail
Technician
Nail technicians are in high demand! And, did you know that Connecticut does not
require professional manicurists to hold a license? Learn from a licensed hair
dresser/cosmetologist and business owner what it takes to work for a salon or
even start your own business doing nails. This hands-on class will focus on
applying acrylic tips and natural nail overlays as well as performing fills.
However, a demonstration of gel nails and airbrushing will also be performed.
Correct sanitation procedures will be emphasized and common problems such as
allergic reactions and fungus will be addressed. You will also learn the proper
use of a drill (electric file). The registration fee includes the cost of a
complete equipment and product kit. Students should bring a willing friend to
each class on whom they can practice their techniques. Click

Training
Want to learn basic dog obedience in a relaxed, fun, yet productive atmosphere?
Does your dog need a tune-up? This class is for you! Dogs must be at least five
months old and be up to date on vaccinations. Please bring a choke chain (be
sure you have correct size for your dog) and a five-foot or longer cotton lead
to first class. NO FLEXI OR CHAIN LEADS. For any questions regarding collars or

Introduction to the
Fiddle
Playing the fiddle is becoming an increasing popular recreational activity, as
witnessed by the growth of fiddle clubs, magazines, and summer camps. In our
area the Quiet Corner Fiddlers, the Old Fiddlers Club of Rhode Island, and the
CT Bristol Old Tyme Fiddlers present opportunities for amateur fiddlers to
develop skills and perform in public. In this fun class an experienced fiddler
will teach you how to hold and play the fiddle, use a variety of playing
techniques, and read music. The instructor will also lead the class in learning
several tunes. Please bring a playable violin and bow and $20 for a book/CD

for Beginners
Learn the basic tools needed to turn your hum drum photos into works of art you
will be proud to display! This course will show you how to create photographs
with impact. You will learn how to set your camera to best photograph
landscapes, create depth, and create flattering people pictures. This course
covers the use of print and slide films, filters, and other tools for creative
effects. This course is not for those who have automatic cameras. Please bring
your own 35mm SLR, digital SLR, or manual camera, with its instruction manual
and five to ten photos for the instructor to review. Assignments given each week
will require commercial developing. No photographic or darkroom experience is
necessary.

Registration: Paid
pre-registration is required! Registrations are processed on a first-come,
first-served, PAID basis. Classes run contingent on PAID enrollment and may be
cancelled or postponed due to insufficient registrations. If class is canceled
or postponed, you will be notified using the contact information you provide
with your registration.
Confirmation/Receipts:
Confirmations of registration in a class, written or verbal, are not provided
unless requested. Please provide a self-addressed, paid envelope should you need
a written confirmation or receipt. Unless you are otherwise notified, classes
will run as scheduled.
Refund Policy: A full refund
will be issued ONLY when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If you
decide not to take a class, a 90% refund will be issued if we are notified 10
days prior to the first class. A 50% refund will be issued if we are notified
before the second class meeting. No refunds apply to one-day classes or bus
trips unless EASTCONN cancels the course. Please allow one month for processing.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

EASTCONN Adult Education offers several options for completing your
high school education. Our programs help you earn your diploma through a variety
of methods that build on the skills and experience you already have. And all of
our programs are convenient and offered free of charge. Don’t wait a minute

The Connecticut State Diploma: General Education Development (GED):
EASTCONN offers preparation for the GED exam that covers subject matter common
to high school curricula across the country. Adults who pass the exam are issued
a Connecticut High School Diploma from the State Department of Education.
Accommodations for the GED test are available for qualified individuals with a
disability.
Adult High School Credit Diploma (AHSCDP): An EASTCONN high school
diploma may be earned by adults who fulfill state requirements through a
combination of past high school credits, independent study, online courses,
evening classes, documented work experience, and community service.
The External Diploma Program (EDP): This nationally-directed diploma
program, administered by EASTCONN, is based on 65 competencies demonstrated
through life and work experience. Completion time for this program is based on
the individual's pace and schedule.
OPTIONS (Out-of-School Youth): This high school completion/employment
program for eligible out of school youth between the ages of 16 and 21 is funded
by the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board. It is designed to assist
eligible out-of-school youth to move from a high school drop out to a high
school graduate, to advance from unemployed to gainfully employed, and to enter
postsecondary programs. This program includes a case manager who works with
participants to overcome barriers that prevent them from being successful in
school and the workplace.
Other Adult
Education Programs:
- EASTCONN's Roads to Success: This
intensive program combines basic skills and high school completion with
development of employability and work readiness skills, including basic
computer skills. Participants also develop resumes, cover letters, job
search skills, and a career plan. For more information, contact Suzanne

- EASTCONN, ETC. (Employment, Training, College): This program
transitions students who have successfully completed EASTCONN’s GED or AHSCDP
programs to postsecondary education and training programs. With the assistance
of a Transitions Coach, students learn about postsecondary options and develop
a transition plan which can include visiting programs and completing
applications and financial aid forms to reach their postsecondary goals.
- English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL):
Beginning and intermediate level ESL classes are available for individuals
of limited English proficiency seeking to improve their speaking and
listening skills.
- Citizenship Classes: EASTCONN
citizenship classes help individuals prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.
- Basic Skills Instruction: Instruction
in reading, writing and/or math skills is offered days and evenings.

Community Education Instructors: Teach a credit-free, recreational
evening course for adults next fall through EASTCONN Community Education. Share

not required. Please note: While all course ideas are very welcome, we are
especially looking for instructors in the following areas: Microsoft Office
Suite, car repair and maintenance, household repair and maintenance, math and
verbal SAT preparation, digital photography, and cake decorating. Earn some
