Parent and Family Programs

Family Literacy
Family Literacy focuses on the parent/guardian as the child's first teacher and encourages families to read and learn together. Intergenerational instruction and support is provided to enrich the family environment and to promote lifelong learning. Adult Education's Family Literacy programming can include:

  • High School credentialing

  • Basic reading, writing and math instruction

  • Parenting skills training

  • English as a Second Language instruction

  • P.A.C.T. (Parent-and-Child-Together) activities

Benefits: Family Literacy Programs have a positive impact on the whole family by enhancing the relationships between parents/guardians and their children; the program enriches the literacy and educational experiences of family members.

Family Visitation Center
The EASTCONN Family Visitation Center is funded by DCF and provides supervised visits for parents and children, who have been placed in foster care. Services take place in centers and in community settings throughout the EASTCONN area; e.g. Willimantic, Danielson, Thompson. Referrals are made through the family's DCF worker. Foster and adoptive family support services are also available in this program. Information can be obtained by calling (860)456-4717.

  • Visits are conveniently located in local, community settings.
  • Staff are knowledgeable about a range of services and can make appropriate referrals.

Parents In Partnership (PIP)
Parents in Partnership (PIP) is an intensive family support and parent education program that emphasizes the development and maintenance of healthy relationships between parents and their children. Services include home visits, playgroup, parent education, modeling of appropriate skills, advocacy and community programming information. PIP provides a continuum of supportive services to families of children from birth through five years. There are no income or other qualifying prerequisites. Services are delivered in the home, center or other community settings during hours that meet the family's needs. Bilingual staff and resources are available.

Benefits: 

  • Bilingual, bicultural staff assures that services will be delivered to Spanish-speaking families in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Program services are flexible in order to meet a variety of needs.
  • Parents design their own programs.

Stay-n-Play Drop-In Child Care Center
Care is provided for up to 3 hours a day for children 6 weeks to 7 years old in a nurturing, friendly, safe environment staffed by experienced care givers. Pre-registration is required and fees are determined on a sliding scale.
