Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone participate in New Images?
New Images is open to all high school students who attend participating schools. Right now that includes students from Bloomfield, Griswold, Woodstock Academy, Norwich Free Academy, and Rockville. But districts are often added during the year.

What if my school doesn’t participate?
If your school doesn’t currently participate, you can contact a teacher or administrator about joining the program. They can contact either Barbara Greenbaum or Peter Landry at EASTCONN and, as grant coordinators, to discuss the possibility of joining the team.

Does New Images require photography equipment?
No, equipment is available as part of the grant. We provide the schools with the necessary equipment and further assist teachers with the technical requirements they may need. Cameras are limited in number, but available.

Is prior experience with either cameras or writing required?

No. We expect that students who participate in the program have an interest in developing their skills with photography, writing or both. No experience is required.

How advanced are the kids who participate?

Our past participates have broad range of skill levels on both the technical and the writing side. Some students are active members of writing clubs at their home schools, and some are active in their home school tech or print shops. Some students have had no experience at all with either cameras or creative writing. Part of the fun is having students help each other.

Do you get to take pictures or write about anything you want to?

Yes, as long as it is acceptable to your teacher. Student work is very much defined by the student. When we are visiting locations, such as the Windham Mills, subjects are defined only by the location, but the student page in the book or work at the exhibit is ultimately up to the student. We have overarching central themes that drive a number of the activities. These themes are established collaboratively with the input of all the teachers in the program, but the final piece is up to each student to design and execute. As the work is seen by the public, it must be appropriate for all age groups.

Who do I talk to about the program?
Call Barbara Greenbaum or Peter Landry directly at EASTCONN. Our number there is 860-455-0707.
