Instructor-Facilitated Online Classes

Because we know your time is precious … EASTCONN Community Education is proud to offer instructor-facilitated online courses that are informative, fun, convenient, and highly interactive. Our instructors are famous for their ability to create warm and supportive communities of learners. It's no wonder that many long-lasting friendships have formed in our lively and intelligent discussion areas. All courses run for six weeks (with a two-week grace period at the end). Courses are project-oriented and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, supplementary links, and more. You can complete any of these courses entirely from your home or office and at any time of the day or night.

How to get started:

1. Just click on the Ed2Go logo below to view our complete list of instructor-facilitated online classes.

2. Click the Courses link, once you choose the department and course title you are interested in, select the Enroll Now button. Follow the instructions to enroll and pay for your course. Here you will choose a username and password that will grant you access to the Classroom.

3. When your course starts, return to our Online Instruction Center and click the Classroom link. To begin your studies, simply log in with the username and password you selected during enrollment.

Please note!! Online classes require you to register securely online using a MasterCard, VISA., or American Express. Do not use the Community Education registration form to register for any online classes.

ARTFUL CRAFTS

INTRODUCTION TO WIRE JEWELRY
This workshop will provide you with a solid foundation for making your own one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry as you learn solderless chain-making and how to create a variety of wire art bead wraps. Incorporate these techniques into your own beadwork or use them to embellish your own works of art! Forging and oxidizing will also be discussed. BEAD-BEZELED CABOCHONS
Use a variety of seed beads to create a stunning pendant after this class teaches you the basic technique for fashioning a bezel around a cabochon (flat-backed stoned) or shank-style button. Samples of this technique can be seen on the instructor’s Web site at www.bellefirebeads.com.

STAINED GLASS
Learn the basics of scoring and cutting glass using lead came and copper foil methods for creating beautiful sun-catchers, mirrors, jewelry trays, windows, kaleidoscopes, lamps and much more. Bring $80 to the first class for a materials kit, which includes a 100-Watt soldering iron, 60/40 solder, copper foil, flux and brush, breaking pliers, marking pen, glass cutter, and glass.

HANDBUILT POTTERY BEGINNERS/INTERMEDIATE
Discover the art of handbuilt pottery in this hands-on workshop taught by a seasoned instructor with more than 30 years of experience in the field. Make and glaze several clay items of your own design using basic potting techniques, including slab- and tile-making, coil, pinch pot, and basic carving. Learn also about firing and glaze calculation. No experience is necessary, but potters of all skill levels are welcome. Bring $35 for materials, which include clay, glaze, and firing. All other supplies, including tools and aprons, will be provided by the instructor.

Help celebrate spring by designing your personal garden ornament. You will use various hand-building techniques like coiling, slabbing and pinch-potting to create plant stakes, pavers/ stepping stones or bird baths. Learn how to create and preserve beautiful mosaic projects. Your first project will be an ornate mirror that can be used as a wall hanging or a tabletop. Once having learned the basic skills of stained glass-making, you are limited only by your imagination.

Learn techniques of one-stroke painting. During the first class you will learn to paint rose buds and leaves on vines. The second class will explore open roses & purple wisteria. Both projects will be painted on a glass vase to bring home and enjoy for years to come.

FINDING THE ARTIST WITHIN
In a non-judgmental, supportive environment, each participant will be able to foster the artist within. Various mediums will be used, including, but not limited to: collage, drawing, painting, sculpture, bookmaking, journaling, creative writing, etc. Each week, participants will work on a new project and discuss their pieces. An artist or non-artist at any level will benefit from participation. Please bring color photocopies of pictures of yourself and people, pets or objects that hold meaning for you.

PLASTIC MAGNETS & MORE
Learn how to cut plastic canvas to create different shapes. Learn several different stitching styles and techniques, using different colors of yarn. Create that one-of-kind magnet! SCRAPBOOKING FOR BEGINNERS
Do you have boxes and boxes of pictures and memorabilia? Well, this class is for you! Learn how to organize a photo scrapbook by year, theme or event and how to use cropping tools. You’ll also learn how to use color schemes and how to decorate and enhance scrapbooks with theme-related stickers and embellishments. “Journal” your memories! Bring your photos and/or memorabilia and an empty shoe box to the first class. A list of materials for you to purchase (costing $30) will be handed out at the first class.

If you are using a manual computing system for your existing business or starting a new business, this class is for you! We will focus on all aspects of QuickBooks Pro 2008. You are welcome to bring your own data, which can be temporarily loaded onto our computer. We will introduce you to basic accounting principles, so you’ll know whether or not your reports make sense. In class, you will be able to customize what you have learned and apply it to your company’s needs.

Microsoft Excel for Windows is a powerful, user-friendly spreadsheet program for home and business applications. The objective of this class is to learn the fundamentals of a worksheet through a hands-on approach. You will also learn program and toolbar configuration, how to format and create professional-looking tables, and how to use formulas and functions through practice with real-world examples. BELLY DANCE LEVEL I
Experience the mind-body connection with belly-dancing, one of the Middle East’s best-known, classical dance traditions. As you learn the steps of this ancient dance form, you will feel a deeper sense of connection to the self and the energy flow between thought and movement. ● BEGINNER LATIN DANCE LEVEL I
If you got excited about the TV contest “Dancing with the Stars” and wished that you could join the fun, then this is the class for you. You’ll master hot Latin rhythms like salsa, cumbia, and merengue. The class will also introduce you to other Caribbean rhythms like the cha-cha, mambo and bachata. No partner necessary. Bring non-marking shoes or sneakers and a bottle of water.

YOGA
Relieve tension, improve flexibility, strengthen your immune and nervous systems, increase self-awareness, and relieve tensions through yoga. Emphasis is on exercise and stretching, and class also includes both a relaxation period and a short meditation with relaxed postures. Wear loose clothing and bring a mat or towel. No shoes are allowed in the dance room.

● DON’T BE A VICTIM: SELF-DEFENSE FOR WOMEN
Learn how awareness and preparedness skills can minimize your risk of falling victim to assault or rape, as well as how to subdue an attacker if necessary. Learn basic grappling moves from the Chinese art of Chi Na that will enable you to escape from or defend yourself against any situation in which you are grabbed, held or otherwise restrained. The class will consist of lecture and physical training. Students will practice moves on each other in pairs. Wear comfortable clothes. No shoes are allowed in the practice room.

COUPLES MASSAGE
Over the course of four weeks, couples will learn a basic Swedish massage. During the last two weeks, each will get a full-hour massage from their partner. Couples will need to bring a sleeping bag or mat to share, their own oil/lotion, plus two sheets or large towels for draping.

KITCHEN CREATIVITY

● SPRING CHOCOLATE EXTRAVAGANZA
Tempt your taste buds with this spring-themed chocolate class! Impress your friends and family with the luscious chocolate creations you’ll make and take home. During the first class, you will learn how to make a Chocolate mousse cup, an edible chocolate “egg” with chocolate mousse filling, and chocolate-dipped fruit bunnies. On night two, work with other melted-chocolate techniques to create more spring concoctions! You will make strawberry eggs, candied apples and chocolate-dipped kabobs! We hope you can resist eating your creations before you get home!

● EASY CAKE DECORATING
Impress people with your ability to apply these simple, beautiful and effective techniques for decorating cakes. This course will share with you the secrets for baking the perfect cake. You’ll learn how to make homemade frosting and then ice a cake for a professional look. You will learn how to make character cakes, using a “star” frosting technique. Simple borders like shells and swirls will be added for the perfect touch. From dinosaurs to a 1950’s-themed party, learn ways to make your own themed cake. By the end of this course, you will also take home a finished, themed cake of your choice. Bring any size and/or shape baked cake to first class.

  PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

ACCOUNTING & BOOKKEEPING
Learn the basic process of accounting, including different types of ownership structures, the basic accounting equations and simple financial statements. Practice with double-entry bookkeeping and basic ledgers and learn about accounts receivable and accounts payable. This class will focus on how to handle advanced financial statements and adjust journal entries. Depreciation methods and payroll reporting will be discussed. The cost of the textbook is included in the registration fee.

● BEGINNING SPANISH LEVEL I
Learn the basics of conversation through this interactive system of practice-reading, role-playing activities and more. Learn word pronunciation, phonics, syllables, vocabulary, simple numbers (up to 100), days of the week, months, etc. Make sentences in simple present tense. You will be provided with a Spanish is Fun textbook on the first night of class.

● THE ART OF STONEWORK
This hands-on class, taught by author and stonemason Jim Wesolowski, will not only teach you the basics of stonework, the tools (hammers and crowbars) and techniques (two over one, one over two), it will also help you get a “feel” for the art of stonework itself: how to listen to stone, how to see it, move it, shape it, and build with it so the outcome is pleasing to both eye and spirit. Whether you want to place a few stones artfully in your garden or build a 100-foot wall across your yard, the principle of “dancing” with stone can be learned and applied with pleasure and satisfaction by almost anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and jump in. Five classes will be held. The first class will be in a classroom and the next four will be (field trips) outdoors.

LIQUOR LIABILITY SEMINAR
Publisher and editor of the 2008 Connecticut liquor regulations and states book, attorney Jan C. Trendowski will lead this seminar discussing the new laws and how they apply to the liquor industry. LIVING WILL SEMINAR
Many people fail to draw up a living will, which indicates a person’s preferences about medical decisions in advance of a serious illness or injury. This seminar will inform you about the legal paperwork and documents necessary to establish a living will. These documents will be available to all who attend, and witnesses will be present so these documents can be completed at the session, if desired. A $50 additional fee will be charged, payable during class, to have the attorney review and notarize your document (typical costs are $200).

COLLEGE BOARD SAT I MATHEMATICS PREP COURSE
High school students! This course will prepare you for the College Board SAT I Mathematics Exam. Students are encouraged to purchase The Official SAT Study Guide. It is available at major bookstores (or from their Web sites), or from the College Board’s Web site at: www.collegeboard.com.

● INTRODUCTION TO THE FIDDLE
Playing the fiddle is becoming an increasingly popular recreational activity, as witnessed by the growth of fiddle clubs, magazines, and summer camps. In this delightful class, an experienced fiddler will teach you how to hold and play the fiddle, use a variety of playing techniques, and read music. The instructor will also lead the class in learning several tunes. Please bring a playable violin and bow and $20 for a book/CD package to the first class. This enjoyable and interactive course will teach you everything you need to know to play guitar, as well as the secrets to taking your guitar-playing to another level. DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINING
Does your dog need an obedience tune-up? This class is for you! Learn basic dog-obedience techniques in a relaxed, fun, productive atmosphere. Payment: Please make checks payable to "EASTCONN Community Education." Phone and fax registrations accepted with VISA and MasterCard only.

Registration: Paid pre-registration is required for all classes! Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served, PAID basis. Classes run contingent on PAID enrollment and may be cancelled or postponed due to insufficient registrations. If class is canceled or postponed, you will be notified using the contact information you provide with your registration.

Confirmation/Receipts: Confirmations of registration in a class, written or verbal, are not provided unless requested. Please provide a self-addressed, paid envelope should you need a written confirmation or receipt. Unless you are otherwise notified, classes will run as scheduled.

Refund Policy: A full refund will be issued ONLY when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If you decide not to take a class, a 90% refund will be issued if we are notified 10 days prior to the first class. A 75% credit, good for one year from issue date, will be issued if we are notified before the second class meeting. No refunds apply to one-day classes or bus trips unless EASTCONN cancels the course. Please allow one month from cancellation notification to receive your check.

2 Diploma Options: One is right for you!

The Connecticut State Diploma - General Education Development (GED):
EASTCONN offers preparation for the GED exam that covers subject matter common to high school curricula across the country. Adults who pass the exam are issued a Connecticut High School Diploma from the State Department of Education. Accommodations for the GED test are available for qualified individuals with a disability.

Adult High School Credit Diploma (AHSCDP):
An EASTCONN high school diploma may be earned by adults who fulfill state requirements through a combination of past high school credits, independent study, online courses, evening classes, documented work experience, and community service.


Other Adult Education Programs:

  • Get with the BEAT (Out-of-School Youth):
    This high school completion/employment program for eligible out-of-school youth between the ages of 16 and 21, is funded by the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board. The program is designed to assist eligible out-of-school youth who want to move from high school drop-out to high school graduate, to advance from unemployed to gainfully employed, and to enter post-secondary programs. A case manager will work with participants to help them overcome barriers that prevent them from being successful in school and in the workplace.
     
  • EASTCONN's Roads to Success:
    This intensive program combines basic skills and high school completion with development of employability and work-readiness skills, including basic computer skills. Participants also develop resumés, cover letters, job search skills, and a career plan. For more information, contact Suzanne Cimochowski in Danielson at (860) 779-3770.
     
  • EASTCONN ETC (Employment, Training, College):
    This program transitions students who have successfully completed EASTCONN's GED or AHSCDP programs to post-secondary education and training programs. With the assistance of a transitions coach, students learn about post-secondary options and develop a transition plan, which can include visiting different programs, and completing applications and financial aid forms to reach their post-secondary goals.
     
  • English as a Second Language (ESL):
    Beginning and intermediate-level ESL classes are available for individuals of limited English proficiency seeking to improve their speaking and listening skills.
     
  • Citizenship Classes:
    EASTCONN citizenship classes help individuals prepare for the U.S. citizenship test.
     
  • Basic Skills Instruction:
    Instruction in reading, writing and/or math skills is offered days and evenings.
     
  • Family Literacy:
    EASTCONN collaborates with Windham Evenstart to provide low-income Windham families with adult education, parenting classes, childhood education and intergenerational literacy programs.
