ACT Program of Studies
Describes the curriculum at ACT

The ACT Scholarship Fund was created in the spring of 2004 to provide tuition assistance to high school arts students who wanted to attend ACT, northeastern Connecticut’s regional arts magnet high school. ACT is an acronym for Arts at the Capitol Theater.

ACT, which is administered by EASTCONN, is open to students with an interest in or a talent for the performing arts. The school is housed at 896 Main Street, Willimantic, in the former art deco-era Capitol Theater, which offers state-of-the-art classroom, studio, theater and arts facilities, thanks to a $17-million renovation several years ago.

Since opening its doors, ACT has enrolled many remarkably talented young men and women from across the region. These emerging, young artists find kindred spirits among their ACT peers and enjoy the benefits of a rigorous arts program, taught by esteemed professionals in a vibrant and exciting academic environment.

ACT offers both a new, full-day, comprehensive high school/arts program and a part-day arts program for public high school students. The ACT Scholarship Fund helps finance student tuition costs for the part-day students. These dedicated part-time students attend their local high schools each morning and travel to ACT for arts classes each afternoon. Arts-oriented programs of study at ACT include performance, theater production, costume design, dance, creative writing and audio/video production.

Tuition for part-day students in 2008-2009 will be $2,850 annually, which many families cannot afford. That’s where the ACT Scholarship Fund comes in. No donation is too small and every dollar counts as we look to bolster the ACT Scholarship Fund each year and distribute as many student scholarships as possible. Last year, ACT distributed $12,000 in scholarships. This year, the ACT fund offered $18,500 to arts students in financial need. Next year, we hope to increase the ACT Scholarship Fund by 50 percent.

The ACT Scholarship Fund is managed by the Community Foundation of The Tri-County Area, a public charity, established in 1998 and dedicated to improving the quality of life in northeastern Connecticut. ACT scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. More information about ACT and the ACT Scholarship Fund is available by contacting ACT’s Main Office at 860-465-5636.
